All quiet on the Western Front

1917: Young Paul Bäumer (Felix Kammerer) volunteers for the Kaiser's war. He and his friends are filled with pride and keen to prove their heroism to family and friends.

Meanwhile, administrators and elements of the German High Command are realising the awful toll war is enacting on the nation and begin to consider the unthinkable: an Armistice.

CW: 20th century trench warfare in all its wasteful gory misery

About once a decade we get a new serious portrayal of the Great War that is widely lauded. We need them from time to time to have something for the current generation to see. The kids aren't going to watch the 1970s adaptation of this classic anti-war novel. Or the 1930s one.

It ticks every box and does its job but I'm not sure it's as praiseworthy as its Oscar haul suggests.

Wonderfully shot it does however just update a familiar personal tale of war that could be from 1918, 1945 or frankly anything since with some minor changes. The archetypes and tragedies are universal.

Solid, 7/10 but I knew it before I'd seen it.
