Free Fire

Late 70s, two IRA men travel to Boston to buy a load of assault rifles for The Cause. The deal is to happen in a deserted warehouse and as well as the supplier, various fixers, helpers and muscle are in attendance.

Nobody expects that a chance encounter the previous night will cause things to go very wrong.

CW: violence and Sharlto Copley being very leery

I was expecting more from this Amy Jump/Ben Wheatley action kinda black comedy.

Most of the participants are assholes and just spend the first half hour of the film being assholes to each other. The dialogue is slick but the amount of insulting and belittling each other that goes on is just improbable, tipping it over into boring.

When it all kicks off you've got a whole bunch of assholes who can't really shoot a gun very well having a half assed gunfight in a filthy factory full of junk and mostly demolished brickwork for cover. The verbal sparring continues in-between bursts of gunfire.

That's it really. For an hour. I started to zone out and not really pay attention.

Disappointing 4/10, I remember this being well received and don't understand why. There's about 45 minutes of material stretched to 90 minutes. What have I missed?
