Under the Silver Lake

Sam (Andrew Garfield) is an directionless slacker with voyeuristic tendencies.

Watching his neighbour, who likes to go around topless, from his balcony he notices a new neighbour (Riley Keough) who has a small white dog. Later he starts up a conversation with her, gets invited into her apartment and the two start to flirt. When her roommates reappear suddenly she ushers him out and says he can see her tomorrow.

The following morning she and most of the contents of the apartment are gone. Sam decides to investigate.

No good will come of this.

CW: nudity and lots of male gaze/objectification of women

The Order

FBI agent Husk (Jude Law) moves to Idaho to staff the previously vacant local office. Not expecting a heavy caseload he begins looking into outstanding low priority files.

When he notices a lot of White Supremacist flyers in town he pulls out the one relating to the large compound nearby where the 'Aryan Nation' live. Speaking to the local Sheriff's office they reckon they keep themselves to themselves and aren't a problem. Later a Deputy Bowen (Tye Sheridan) takes him aside and says he thinks they're quietly up to a great deal of illegal activity including counterfeiting. The Deputy has been making a dossier of seemingly unrelated crime that he thinks fits a pattern.

No good will come of this.

CW: white supremacy, antisemitism, Nazi symbols, salutes and language; the whole gamut of this stuff

Runaway

It is 199x and robots have replaced lots of manual labour in all manner of sectors. They tend the fields, work construction, cook our meals and babysit our children. Nonetheless sometimes they malfunction and go "runaway", usually in pretty harmless ways.

Sergeant Jack R. Ramsay (Tom Selleck) and his new partner Officer Karen Thompson (Cynthia Rhodes) work the Runaway squad, seen as a pretty oddball dept. perhaps akin to animal control.

Then one day a standard housemaid unit goes berserk, killing two and putting a child at risk. Ramsay deals with it but uncovers a conspiracy to turn harmless robots into killers.

CW: 80s cop movie bullshit like making Kirstie Allie strip off in a scanner because she's got tracking bugs planted on her, lots of 'woman in peril' shots

Insomnia

Detectives Dormer (Al Pacino) and Eckhart (Martin Donovan) are sent from L.A. to the remote community of Nightmute Alaska to assist with the investigation of the murder of a 17yr old woman. This is unusual but the local Police have asked for assistance and it also gets them out of the immediate grasp of an ongoing Internal Affairs investigation that may implicate one or both of them. When they arrive they are greeted by Det. Burr (Hilary Swank) who is a follower of Dormer who is somewhat of a famous solver of tough murder cases.

Nightmute is inside the Arctic circle and as it's summer has day round daylight. Dormer can't sleep.

No good will come of this.

The Nice Guys

In 1970s L.A. Jackson Healey (Russell Crowe) makes a less than legal living beating people up for money: he prefers it if they're something unsavoury like a sex pest but he's not fussy.

Holland March (Ryan Gosling) has a more legitimate business as a Private Investigator tracking people down for money but he's scarcely any more moral. March has been hired to look for the famous porn actress Misty Mountains, despite her dying very publicly a few days earlier in a car crash. Her aunt is convinced she's seen her since.

March's investigation has lead him to a young woman called Amelia (Margaret Qualley) but Healey has been paid by her to frighten March off.

Shenanigans ensue.

48 Hrs

When a convict escapes from a work gang and ends up killing two of his fellow Detectives, Jack Cates (Nick Nolte) gets one of the killer's former accomplices Reggie Hammond (Eddie Murphy) out of jail for 48 hours to assist with tracking him down.

CW: all manner of late 70s/early 80s racism and sexism but in a kind of "it was like that then: shrug" kind of way.

The Conjuring: The Devil made me do it

During a problematic exorcism Ed Warren (Patrick Wilson) is hospitalised and it isn't until after he regains consciousness that Lorraine (Vera Farmiga) finds out they were unsuccessful and the demon had just migrated to the body of a young man present rather than being expelled.

In the meantime he has killed and stands trial for murder but the Warrens suggest a novel defence: "Not guilty by reason of Demonic possession".

CW: suicide

Glass Onion

When the billionaire founder of tech empire "Alpha" invites his closest group of friends, "The Disruptors" to his private island for a murder mystery weekend they are joined by Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) "the world's greatest Detective".

Sadly he's responsible for a murder himself, that of the great party that had been planned.

Knives Out

After venerable crime novelist Harlan Thrombey (Christopher Plummer) dies in an apparent suicide the night of his 85th birthday party the bickering family linger at his mansion.

The police return a few days later with more questions and this time the famed private Detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) is with them. It seems he has been hired to investigate a murder...

Enola Holmes 2

Enola Holmes (Millie Bobby Brown) has started her own Detective agency after the events of the first movie but it is overshadowed by her more famous older brother Sherlock (Henry Cavill). With no meaningful clients she is in the midst of shutting up shop when an orphan matchgirl comes begging her to look for her missing sister.

Unable to turn down such a desperate case, little does she know it will uncover a terrible conspiracy.

CW: nothing, this is super family friendly adventure fun for all but younger kids

Memories of Murder

Following the brutal rape and murder of two young women in provincial Korea, lead Detective Park Doo-man resorts to the local department's usual old school methods to try and apprehend the killer. Rumour suggests a local mentally handicapped man is responsible and Park sets to beating and twisting a confession from him.

Separately, well educated Detective Seo Tae-yoon travels from Seoul to assist with the investigation and when he arrives is appalled at how the investigation is being conducted.

The two men clash, unsurprisingly...
