The Wonder

English Nurse Mrs. Wright (Florence Pugh) travels to rural Ireland to take part in a watch over a young girl, Anna, who it is claimed has not eaten for four months and is sustained by "manna from heaven".

A tribunal has been convened to consider if this is a bona fide miracle and together with a Nun, Mrs. Wright will observe if she does in fact not require food.

CW: starvation, force feeding, child abuse, incest

An odd period drama this, rather claustrophobic.

Anna is filled with religious fervour and constantly recites prayer and catechism. There's a small element of trying to figure out how she survives but what's more important is knowing how it came to this. The local worthies are all hoping for a miracle or saint and looking to make that happen.

There are some references back to the Great Famine but these are infrequent and subtle.

Mostly we get Florence Pugh doing angsty drama for 100 minutes, with a slightly improbable ending.

7/10 atmospheric but slow.
