Black Box

Nolan Wright (Mamoudou Athie) is a young father struggling after a serious accident killed his wife and left him in a coma only to emerge with complicated memory issues.

He relies heavily on his daughter Ava (Amanda Christine) to prompt him through daily routine when the various post-its and reminders he is surrounded by fail.

When a doctor (Phylicia Rashad) offers him an experimental treatment using a hypnotic, immersive VR environment to stimulate his brain he's initially sceptical but takes up the offer as the toll on young Ava grows.

No good will come of this.

CW: domestic violence, mild horror

This science fiction driven psychological horror makes do with minimal scaffolding and a small but decent cast, particularly the young Amanda Christine.

Not the most original thing on the face of it, the reveal comes in about halfway through but it takes an unexpectedly positive redemptive turn from there.

Another off a "best of Blumhouse" list this was probably made for a tenner and there's more to like in this than the whole of Secret Invasion. Recommended 7/10.
