Insidious Chapter 2

Josh (Patrick Wilson) and Renai (Rose Byrne) have moved in with her mother Lorraine (Barbara Hershey) after the events of the first movie. A Police investigation is still ongoing and they've not had any respite.

CW: lots of jump scares again

This sequel was inevitable given the financial success of the first. There's more budget to this but they don't get much to show for it.

Having tipped their hand in the first movie with astral travelling to "The Further" and a chunk of "ghostbusting" ending in much manifestation it would be hard for them to hit reset and start with denial (well "ignore it and it will stop") but they try to. I can see why though: if you start with the dial at 11 where can you go?

Then the Ghostbusters are back and trying to root out the cause of it all.

They rescue this potentially repetitive yawnfest with flashback sequences and as it goes on some very nice flitting back in time retcon that is well thought through happens.

The jump scares are less well done and it focuses on the cat & mouse ghostbusting hunt but it mostly works.

6/10 more haunted house possessiony nonsense that isn't going to work for people who aren't fans of horror. I dabble and found it OK but it is kind of emblematic of why people dismiss the genre as trashy, because this sort of was.
