Sisu

Late WWII in a remote area of Finland, lone prospector Aatami Korpi (Jorma Tommila) strikes lucky and finds a huge deposit of gold.

While travelling to bank this he crosses paths with a group of retreating Waffen SS. Initially they ignore him but some stragglers decide to shake him down for whatever they can.

No good will come of this.

CW: riotously bloody grindhouse violence, rape

Civil War

The USA is in a state of Civil War and everything points to a secessionist victory. Renowned War photographer Lee (Kirsten Dunst) and journalist/fixer Joe (Wagner Moura) plan to take a circuitous route to Washington DC avoiding most of the fighting and to _try_ to interview the President before the fall of the Capitol. This is considered a near suicidal endeavour by senior journalist Sammy (Stephen McKinley Henderson) but he nonetheless takes a spot on their truck.

While photographing a food riot Lee encounters a young woman, Jessie (Cailee Spaeny), who wants to be a journalist and is carrying around an old film camera.

Expecting never to see her again, the following morning Lee finds Jessie in the last seat in the truck: she has persuaded Joe to let her tag along.

No good will come of this.

CW bloody violence, executions, lynchings, corpses littering the streets

Bushwick

Lucy (Brittany Snow) is taking her boyfriend Jose (Arturo Castro) to meet her family for the first time. As they are leaving the subway station things are eerily quiet and the announcer says the station is closing as all services are suspended. Lucy dismisses this as just usual Brooklyn bullshit.

No good will come of this.

All quiet on the Western Front

1917: Young Paul Bäumer (Felix Kammerer) volunteers for the Kaiser's war. He and his friends are filled with pride and keen to prove their heroism to family and friends.

Meanwhile, administrators and elements of the German High Command are realising the awful toll war is enacting on the nation and begin to consider the unthinkable: an Armistice.

CW: 20th century trench warfare in all its wasteful gory misery

Black Crab

In the midst of an unspecified conflict in Sweden, Caroline Edh (Noomi Rapace) is a volunteer soldier and things are not going well for her side.

Diverted from her next assignment Caroline is put in a team expected to deliver a package across the frozen sea, which is held by the enemy. All of them are people chosen for being good at cross-country skating and survival.

They are told this is a do or die mission that may end the war but none of them are entirely clear why or how they're expected to accomplish it.

Red Dawn

In an alternative history of the Cold War the Soviet Union makes a sudden surprise invasion of the United States with a mixed force of troops from different communist states.

In the ensuing chaos a group of young adults escape to the Colorado mountains with rudimentary supplies and weapons. After hiding out for some weeks they return to town only to find many people they knew dead and those remaining living in fear of the occupiers.

They resolve to fight back, engaging in partisan activity under the banner of their High School football team, The Wolverines.

CW: war crimes and quite a lot of mostly bloodless battle scenes

Full Metal Jacket

We follow a group of recruits to the US Marine Corps from entry through to fighting in the ruined towns and cities of Vietnam.

CW: lots of 1960s racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic language but the real horror is the dehumanising effect of war

Dr. Strangelove

At the height of the "Mutually Assured Destruction" stage of the Cold War, an American General paranoid with thoughts of "Reds under the bed" and odd notions about fluoridation of water issues the orders for a retaliatory strike against the USSR by the B-52 bombers under his command. There has been nothing to retaliate against, he's just unhinged.

As those under his command defend the airbase against those sent to make him issue the recall order a seconded British officer attempts to win him back around. Meanwhile America's 'Top Brass' assemble in the Pentagon War Room to discuss what can be done.
