Moon

In the future, Earth's energy problems have been solved by He3, strip mined from the surface of the moon by automated harvesters. Sam Bell (Sam Rockwell) is a lone maintenance worker making sure this runs like clockwork. The live satellite link is down so his only company is a tethered robotic assistant Gerty (voiced by Kevin Spacey) and he tends to anthropomorphise things around the station.

He's approaching the end of his three year contract, glad to return to his family as he's feeling increasingly tired and sick. Occasionally he sees things.

When one of the harvesters breaks down he takes a drive out to fix it but loses concentration and crashes his rover.

No good will come of this.

This takes a not uncommon ethical thought piece topic from written science fiction and turns it into an easily digestible movie. Which is a great piece of skill from Director Duncan Jones.

With just Sam Rockwell onscreen it relies entirely on his performance and while it's clear a lot of this is him being Sam Rockwell if you've seen his other movies, it's exactly what was needed.

The visuals are great. The station is a mashup of the Nostromo and a branch of Vision Express and having Gerty as a friendly but very industrial "creepy computer" really works. If I could build a dream sci-fi LARP set I would want it to look like Sarang Station.

The theme is covered with a little exposition but not too much and it's at its best when Gerty stops avoiding questions and is straight with Sam.
