Men

Harper (Jessie Buckley) rents a large historic home in a small village to get away for a while after the suicide of her husband.

At first she revels in the nature and quiet but then while on a walk finds she is being stalked by a naked man who eventually ends up back at the house. The Police respond quickly and effectively but this is not the last trouble she will face from Men.

CW: suicide, domestic controlling abuse, injury detail, gore, birthing, fucking weird

Alex Garland does a scream of female rage expressed through folk horror imagery.

Every single male character, apart from Harper's dead husband is played by Rory Kinnear. From the mostly harmless but boorish Geoffrey owner of the house to the male police officer, the barman, priest, a schoolchild and the 'green man' that nakedly stalks her. They are all varying expressions of toxic masculinity to a greater or lesser degree.

It looks great. Jessie Buckley isn't stretched but suits the role. Kinnear has fun with the many parts but there's something of a Fast Show sketch about all the male characters bearing the same face and the application of his face to a child actor just doesn't work, it looks pasted on.

As it approaches its hallucinogenic final section it all just gets too much. There are some great visual effects involved but they are too repetitive and just go on too long with an unimpressed Harper just cooly watching. I felt the same.

It's certainly different I'll give it that but it's a big meh really 6/10
