Revenge

Jen (Matilda Lutz) and Richard (Kevin Janssens) arrive at his showpiece villa on the edge of the desert for a couple of days of relaxing and fucking. He's married and she knows. Jen isn't a sex worker but understands there will be a degree of quid pro quo from a wealthy man towards a young attractive woman.

Unexpectedly his two friends Stan (Vincent Colombe) and Dimtri (Guillaume Bouchède) arrive early for a hunting trip and that night they all get drunk and party by the pool.

The following morning Jen wakes to find Richard has gone off on an errand somewhere leaving her alone with the pair.

No good will come of this.

CW: rape, bloody violence and injury detail

With The Substance appearing for streaming I thought I'd give Coralie Fargeat's previous work a look.

Controversial on release this does use all the visual language of a titillating exploitation movie lingering on Lutz as she struts about the villa in skimpy clothing before the attack that sets things in motion.

There's been a trend in recent years of movies where people (usually men) who nobody ever says no to get their comeuppance in violent ways and this is one of the better entries although very much reliant on horror movie logic. It's stunningly shot with the empty desert as a backdrop and splashes of bright colour, often blood red.

There are chunks of visual metaphor. Jen's belongings are burned and later she emerges from a cave after a transformational experience branded with a phoenix (no this doesn't make much sense but let's go with it) looking very little like the woman who wore the now burned I♥NY t-shirt.

If a movie contains all the elements of a titillating exploitation movie does it become one? Intent is key and I think Fargeat's intent is clear. Knowingly shocking 8/10.
