Yule Log 2: Branchin' out

Zoe (Andrea Laing), the lone survivor of the cabin massacre in "Yule log" struggles to cope, seeing the killer log everywhere and has taken to carrying an axe at all times. Her erratic behaviour gets her sacked and she departs for a holiday in Mexico to try and 'reset'.

On the way a freak accident leaves her stuck in the cute little town of Mistletoe which is about to host its annual Yule Log Festival.

No good will come of this.

CW: bloody violence

I was unclear how this sequel could work, what with how OTT/bizarre the first was. Here we've a spoof Hallmark Christmas movie with lots of hunky eligible men vying for Zoe's attention while very clearly nothing is really right and the looming spectre of the Yule Log is ever present. They use changes in colour grade and aspect to signal moves between the magical reality of Mistletoe and Zoe's world of horror.

It's totally weird, perhaps even more surreal than the first and maintains that naff vs. cringe conflict. Structurally more conventional it's lost some of the appeal of first by being mostly just a spoof but I still rate it 6/10. This is because despite being objectively godawful it is knowingly channelling the awfulness of generic Christmas slop. I absolutely definitely would like to see another instalment just to see what they do next.
