Videodrome

Max Renn (James Woods) is one of the board of Civic TV a niche broadcast TV channel specialising in lurid material, mostly violence and soft porn. He is always on the lookout for anything that will bring in viewers in a completely ruthless quest for audience share.

One day his "talent scout" finds a satellite channel showing scenes of sadomasochistic bondage, torture and murder with no pretence at narrative: Videodrome.

No good will come of this.

CW: body horror, self harm, suicide

"Long live the new flesh"

David Cronenberg's famously bizarre body horror opus has aged far better than I expected. Mixing up ideas of mass mind control that seem both far fetched and simultaneously pertinent in the current media landscape and more straightforward infection based body horror ideas as Max's grip on reality falters it's still gripping. I think I liked it more now than when I last saw it some time in the 90s.

All the kinky stuff with Debbie Harry is actually a bit tiresome in my book. She's not much of an actress it's just stunt casting.

Nonetheless one of the great bits of 80s cult cinema 9/10.

I watched this because I am really looking forward to "I watched the TV glow" and may even rewatch "Everybody's going to the World's Fair" soon.
