The Fly

Ronnie Quaife (Geena Davis) is a journalist working for a pop science magazine looking for an interesting story at a conference when Seth Brundle (Jeff Goldblum) tells her he has an invention that will change the entire world.

Somewhat sceptical she goes to his run down warehouse laboratory to find out more.

No good will come of this.

CW: body horror, abortion

A bit of Cronenberg that for some reason I'd never seen but then he's quite prolific. It's probably his most mainstream 'horror' movie with a well deserved popular and critical reception.

Still quite transgressive it's very accessible in a way that something like Videodrome just isn't. I'm not enamoured with how Ronnie's stalkery ex seems to suddenly become a white knight in the final act, it's a big tone change, but getting what was needed narratively from a film with just three characters perhaps justifies it.

The creature effects felt weaker than I expected but this is made up for by Goldblum's great physical performance.

A great piece of popular 80s horror 8/10.
