The Omega Man

In the midst of a Sino-Russian war, one side turns to biowarfare and releases an engineered plague. Most of humanity succumbs.

Robert Neville (Charlton Heston) was a scientist working on an experimental vaccine as society disintegrated and out of desperation injected himself. The vaccine was effective but far too late.

Now he lives a solitary hedonistic life, picking over the luxuries left behind in the city.

He is not the only survivor. A tiny number live with the infection, pale sickly people who hide by day and are led by the messianic Matthias (Anthony Zerbe) who wants to destroy all the trappings of the former world. Including Neville.

CW: it's a bit Blaxploitation in parts

Battle for the Planet of the Apes

The Ape revolution triggered "the vilest war humanity has ever known" but now with the Apes in charge and Caeser (Roddy McDowell) as de-facto King they face a new threat.

General Aldo rankles at attempts to build a post-war society with humans integrated with, if not equal to Apes and plots with a group of more militant Gorillas to take power.

Conquest of the Planet of the Apes

Having been exposed to the possibility of Ape usefulness by Cornelius and Zira and following the plague of companion animals foretold by them, mankind has taken to using Apes for menial labour.

One Ape though is different: their son Caesar (Roddy McDowell) who is as smart as they were and taught to speak by his carer/guardian. Having led a sheltered life pretending to be less than he is when he's finally exposed to mankind's cruelty he begins to plot revolution.

Escape from the Planet of the Apes

This slightly improbable sequel has Ape genius Dr. Milo (Sal Mineo) fixing the ship from the first movie and along with fan favourites Zira (Kim Hunter) and Cornelius (Roddy McDowall) journeying somehow back in time to 1970s Earth.

Here they are soon recovered and become celebrities but there is a lurking threat from those who believe they must be destroyed to safeguard humanity's future.

Beneath the Planet of the Apes

Following directly in the wake of the first film this has another ship crash landing in the future and its sole survivor Brent (James Franciscus) encountering Nova (Linda Harrison), Zira (Kim Hunter) and heading out to look for the missing Taylor.

Meanwhile the more aggressive of the Apes are preparing for war...

Planet of the Apes

Four astronauts embark on a perilous journey at near the speed of light to a distant planet. When they emerge from hibernation they find their ship damaged and sinking in a lake and only three have survived the trip.

Taylor (Charlton Heston), Dodge (Jeff Burton) and Landon (Robert Gunnar) escape to the shore with minimal supplies and strike out across the desolate world looking for food.

They eventually find some people but they are primitive and uncommunicative. It turns out something else rules here...

Deliverance

Four friends (Jon Voight, Burt Reynolds, Ned Beatty & Ronny Cox) set out on a canoe trip down a river in a remote part of Georgia. The whole area is shortly to be flooded as part of a hydroelectric project and this is a last chance to see this piece of unspoilt American wilderness.

Black Crab

In the midst of an unspecified conflict in Sweden, Caroline Edh (Noomi Rapace) is a volunteer soldier and things are not going well for her side.

Diverted from her next assignment Caroline is put in a team expected to deliver a package across the frozen sea, which is held by the enemy. All of them are people chosen for being good at cross-country skating and survival.

They are told this is a do or die mission that may end the war but none of them are entirely clear why or how they're expected to accomplish it.

Mandrake

When infamous murderer Mary Laidlaw (Derbhle Crotty) is released from prison she is assigned probation officer Cathy Madden (Deirdre Mullens).

Mary's crime was sensationalised in the press with talk of satanism and orgies in the woods leading up to an axe murder. She's known as "Bloody Mary" or "The Witch" and the subject of much urban folklore.

Now 30 years later Cathy is resolved to deal with Mary professionally and stop her being hounded even though she's an unsettling presence who is hard to like.
