Later that night as suddenly The Monkey whirrs into life their babysitter dies in a freak hibachi accident. Hal connects this directly with the death and comes to live in fear of the Monkey, which seems to change location when you're not paying attention. One day he tries to cut it up, only to find it back again.
After relentless bullying both by brother Bill and his classmates Hal turns the key again hoping it will kill his brother.
No good will come of this.
CW: violent bloody deaths of the squishy comedic variety
Osgood Perkins does daft comedy horror in this Stephen King adaptation with the Monkey supplying Final Destination style improbable bloody deaths. These often involve Rube Goldberg machine style chains of moving/falling objects.
It's really funny and doesn't just keep the OTT stuff to the deaths. There are great showy stylised performances from all involved. Tatiana Maslany is fun as the young boys' fatalistic mother and we get great cameos from Elijah Wood and Adam Scott but also things like a troupe of cheerleaders at the increasingly bizarre accidents cheering them on for some reason.
Don't think too much about the practicalities this is a slapstick comic done live action. Fun as it is though, you can see it's all just a scaffolding to hang the gore on and there are gaps where I was just waiting for the next one: 7/10.
