You are not my mother

Teenager Charlotte (Hazel Doupe) has a slightly chaotic home life. Her mother (Carolyn Bracken) is depressed and grandmother, who lives with them is infirm. It's implied they don't have much money and live in a run down Dublin estate. At school she is bullied by a gang of aggressive girls.

One day, while dropping her off at school, her mother exclaims "I can't do this any more" and when later that day she's missing everybody fears the worst.

The following night Char's mother is mysteriously back in the house and in uncharacteristically good mood.

No good will come of this.

Kate Dolan's debut is a psychological horror that plays very gently with celtic myth.

What's more notable is the setting, we don't get masses of Irish made horror. The bullies are horrible and well drawn and setting it around halloween is less of a cliche than it might have been as it's more mischief night with illegal bonfires and fireworks than US style halloween.

Hazel Doupe is excellent and while nothing massively surprising happens it feels fresh by taking themes of witchery and the fae and sticking them into a rough modern housing estate.

Worth a look, 7/10.
