Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu

Din Djarin / The Mandalorian (Pedro Pascal) is working with the New Republic to root out remnants of the Galactic Empire. He brings along his adopted child/apprentice Grogu on missions, training him in the Mandalorian creed.

Colonel Ward (Sigourney Weaver) gives Mando his next mission and it means dealing with the infamous Hutt twins and their criminal organisation. Reluctantly he goes along with it.

No good will come of this.

Early episodes of the Mandalorian TV show were "adventure of the week" and Jon Favreau has essentially gone back to this for its big screen outing. It's almost exactly like a big blowout linked two episode season finale.

Which is fine.

People have been snotty about this but regardless of it existing alongside the Star Wars movies it's based on a TV show, what were they expecting?

That back to basics approach goes all the way through it, the plot is linear, the dialogue is simple and almost every choice is a safe one. The baddies are cowards who gurn and betray, the goodies fight the good fight and come back for their friends while the monsters are just monstrous. It's back to Space Western stereotypes and tropes and that's what made the show a hit even if it's got baggy now. It has a quieter section with Grogu and some Anzellans (the tiny beardy mechanics) faffing about while Mando is out of the picture for a bit and that felt in keeping with the show too.

Looking for anything substantial or memorable? Look elsewhere: this is not Andor. I got exactly what I was expecting and some of the action and visuals were great 7/10.
