CW: all manner of late 70s/early 80s racism and sexism but in a kind of "it was like that then: shrug" kind of way.
An 80s "classic" I've never seen before this is every buddy cop action comedy trope ever slathered together into a fairly standard example of the breed. However it's also kind of the progenitor of the whole genre so gets a pass for that.
You can see it was made by a fundamentally 70s filmmaker in the way so much of it is done and later things in the same genre would, as ever, be better than the trailblazer that gave them life.
Nick Nolte is a bit 70s hammy but Eddie Murphy is magnetic in his movie debut. The "redneck bar" scene is amazing and like something inserted from another movie because it's centred on him not Nolte.
Interesting to finally see but very dated 6/10.
