MaXXXine

1985, years after the events of "X", Maxine Minx (Mia Goth) is an established porn star but is trying to break into "straight" movies as she says herself: "in porn, women age like bread not wine".

British horror auteur Elizabeth Bender (Elizabeth Debicki) gives her a chance at the lead in horror sequel "Puritan II" but all the while the Satanic serial killer "The Night Stalker" is terrorising L.A. and seemingly working his way through Maxine's friends and colleagues.

CW: some gore

Ti West's horror trilogy wraps up but is perhaps the weakest of the three.

Mia Goth again is a bit of a chameleon but this can't decide if it's about Maxine's career change or the hunt for the killer and sort of does both a bit half heartedly despite an excellent supporting cast doing perfect knowing 80s stereotypes.

This is the 80s of Satanic panic, video nasties and porn with prurient news reports, mismatched Detectives, evangelical protestors and Frankie goes to Hollywood. At one point a chase scene ends up at the actual Bates Motel set on the studio backlot. It's got a great aesthetic but lacks any real shocks.

Still great retro nostalgia though 7/10.
