His son Anthony, much like he did as a younger man, wants nothing to do with the business.
His daughter Mary (Sofia Coppola) is however beginning to get enmeshed in their business affairs.
When his dead brother's son Vincent (Andy Garcia) comes to him over an argument he takes him under his wing.
No good will come of this.
This is kind of superfluous: like Coppola wanted another turn at the franchise with no real vision for it. Film first, idea second. Gangstery stuff happens and we see Michael Corleone losing his health and being unable to get away from violence.
There's nothing wrong with it but it doesn't have anything new to say or the grand sweep of the first two. Much was made of Sofia Coppola's nepocasting but she's fine if unsophisticated in an unsophisticated part. The inclusion of real world events: the death of the Pontiff and scandals about the Vatican bank are clumsy.
It's got no real conclusion. There's some violence in an Opera House and overlong shots of Michael reacting to it then just a shot of him in "old man makeup".
As per its reputation, just a fizzling out, 6/10.
