One night she is woken by a noise outside the house and assuming it is just raccoons goes to investigate.
No good will come of this.
CW: mild body horror
This is a home invasion movie but with it being Whitley Strieber style Grey Aliens come to probe and/or abduct you.
It's done with a very singular vision. Dever has ONE line of audible dialogue and almost no words are uttered by the rest of the cast, which we see little of.
The Greys are weird and the very 70s & 80s staples of alien abduction get dusted off along with massive homages to Close Encounters like stabbing lights coming in through the windows and stuff flying around the room.
Everything hinges on a highly stylised performance from Dever, it's almost like a mime performance in places with very exaggerated facial expressions and body language. Where this idea came from I don't know but it's hugely effective.
The home invasion alone wouldn't have been enough to sustain it but after an unexpected early twist it gets weird and somehow does worldbuilding without words and eventually digs into Brynn's past.
As it concludes it goes full weird but that's fine with me. Movies like this prove that buried in a sea of franchise blah and mediocrity sometimes little gems get made. 9/10 highly recommended. It's not without flaws but gets this score for being different and fully committing to Brian Duffield's vision. How often do we get (effectively) zero dialogue movies and how many are 100% comprehensible?
