Ellie lives in a decrepit apartment block soon to be demolished. That night there is an earthquake that causes cracks all over the building and opens a hole in the basement garage. One of the kids goes down the hole into a newly exposed old vault to explore.
No good will come of this.
CW: grim and gory from the outset a well earned 18 cert
Lee Cronin reboots a somewhat moribund horror franchise masterfully.
I'm not a massive fan of horror that's just nasty and not much else. This definitely falls into that category but managed to keep me completely gripped.
With all the action taking place in a dingey apartment building you'd expect it to feel restricted but it doesn't.
The deadite makeup and, for want of a better term, 'choreography' is awesome. They move and act inhumanly while it still looks supernatural rather than physically impossible.
It's gore and violence agogo. Once the various improvised weapons in the apartment are exhausted we are treated to Chekhov's landscape gardening equipment in the garage.
Yes you have to like full on video nasty antics for this to be at all watchable but if you do it's a solid 8/10, recommended.
Grim though. Grim, Grim, Grim.
