This is witnessed by pimp Slick Charles (Jamie Foxx) and heard by one of Slick's whores Yo-yo (Teyonah Paris).
The following morning Fontaine wakes from a bad dream and goes about his day. Which is about to get complicated.
CW: Blaxsploitation as fuck
This is the first straight to Netflix thing I've seen for a long time that makes it worth keeping my subscription. So much is dull as ditchwater.
This science fiction genre mashup is a bit Moon, a bit Us, a bit They Live, a bit every 80s inner city ghetto drama and I don't think it's much of a spoiler to say this as you get hints of all this early on if you're paying the least bit of attention.
The three dig into how Fontaine is suddenly back from the dead. Slick is an ineffective coward but Yo-Yo proves an unexpected asset, being a fan of Nancy Drew mysteries. The continuous banter and narration between Paris and Foxx fills the gap left by the brooding Boyega.
It sort of goes places you'd expect but does so with great humour before hitting a spot 75 minutes in where you genuinely wonder what they'll do next.
It's unusual, stylishly shot and excellently cast and even if the conclusion isn't overall anything unexpected it makes up for that by wearing a very fancy pimp suit. Highly recommended 8/10 an excellent debut for Juel Taylor.
My only grumble is a LOT of the scenes are very very dimly lit.
