What her team don't know is she's a top agent for "The Charter", a supranational entity guided by a quantum AI who could probably do the whole mission herself.
Shenanigans ensue.
CW: nothing of note
Netflix are desperate to establish their own signature action franchise but have yet to do so. We've had "The Old Guard", "Extraction", "The Grey Man", "Six Underground" etc. etc. but none of them have really made a mark. Throwing expensive talent and money at something isn't a guaranteed recipe for success, although it usually generates adequacy and a modest return on investment.
Here they go with a Mission: Impossible style setup fronted by Gadot. Who's experienced at doing action heavy stuff and carries it off er, adequately.
They were kind of going for a mild Slow Horses vibe with the British agents she's teamed up with and they do good self deprecating team chemistry while being actually believably human/competent rather than Stone's superspy slickness.
The best turn is from hacker antagonist Keya (Alia Bhatt) while Sophie Okonedo kind of phones it in as Stone's actual boss.
It's not about that though, you came here for action and while it doesn't quite stand up against its direct cinematic influence they do pull off several really decent extended action sequences. While they obviously play fast and loose with physics it's not a constant mad crashy flying explosionfest like Extraction II.
With an AI giving continuous guidance and probability of outcomes there's a lot of expositiony guidance through comms and graphics overlays that gets a bit intrusive but fades as it progresses.
One surprise is they don't letch all over Gadot, which I was expecting, she's just there onscreen doing stuff. There's a tiny hint of romance with one of the team but it soon gets eclipsed thank fuck.
Overall, this perhaps the most convincing of Netflix's recent "please be a franchise" moonshots. It's like a slightly weak entry in the franchise it wants so much to be. 6/10 adequate gender flipped superspy M:I style maguffin hunt nonsense. Could have done with a few more surprises.
