Europa Report

The crew of the Europa One (Anamaria Marinca, Michael Nyqvist, Karolina Wydra, Daniel Wu, Sharlto Copley annd Christian Camargo) travel to Jupiter's moon Europa on a scientific mission to explore its frozen surface and if possible drill through into the ocean expected beneath it.

No good will come of this.

CW: flashing images and fast cuts

This is unusual in being science fiction with a heavy emphasis on the believable over action.

Space is hard, lonely and dangerous and Jupiter is _years_ from Earth with any reasonable short term extrapolation from what we can achieve now. It's swimming in a very small pond of movies that bother to take these things as givens.

It takes the form of an "after action report" that looks partly like a documentary but is essentially a found footage movie with a mix of surveillance footage and "if you were there" scenes.

It's great at showing the danger, stress and boredom in claustrophobic close quarters before getting to the landing and tragic events that the portentous narration has foreshadowed is coming.

Even at this point they still keep the commitment to this being grounded with talk of how a 100m walk really is something very dangerous they perhaps shouldn't attempt.

It's not flashy but recommended 7/10.
