Titane

Alexia (Agathe Rouselle) is involved in a car accident as a young child, seriously injured and ends up stuck in a fixator with a titanium plate in her skull.

Now as an adult she is working as an erotic dancer at car meets, having an affinity for the machines she performs on.

One evening she is assaulted by a stalkerish fan and things take an increasingly violent turn.

CW: Body horror as fuck with violent mayhem, a DIY abortion and general machine fetish weirdness.

Julia Ducournau's previous movie Raw didn't totally work for me but it certainly had something about it.

The really obvious lazy take on this is to compare it to David Cronenberg and there's a good reason. It's very very Cronenberg right down to people's actions not making sense purely in the furtherance of the weird.

There's lots of non-titillating and often grim nudity with a really tough physical performance for Rouselle.

Some of the violence is wince inducing but soon it fades and there's a weird cuckoo in the nest thing going on that felt tasteless and unbelievable.

It feels like this movie is well regarded for being shocking more than being of substance. A series of freaky set pieces thrown at us like chunks of raw meat.

Somebody somewhere will think this is astonishingly profound (it won the Palme d'Or) but for me it was indulgent nonsense 3/10 avoid.
