This is a strange mashup of Western, Samurai revenge thriller and a version of historic Scotland that feels like something from a Mad Max movie.
OK so there are no big rigs but the vibe is similar. John Maclean's vision is kind of dreamy and timeless: the setting is explicit but also could be anywhere or when bad men stalk a wasted land. There's a travelling troupe of players entertaining the mixed bag of locals for scraps and pennies and the bandits look little better off than they do.
It's got some familiar faces in Jack Lowden, Rory McCann and Joanne Whalley but Tim Roth's kingpin baddie is the best of it.
It's slightly let down by some poor British TV level fight choreography once the action kicks off but dirty looking people stomping around blasted moors makes up the bulk of it.
An unusual and entertaining but downbeat thing. 7/10, worth your time.
