In a Violent Nature

A group of friends are staying in a cabin in the mountainous wooded wilderness. While out on a hike they find a derelict collapsed fire lookout tower where hanging from a beam is a shiny gold locket which one of them pockets.

No good will come of this.

CW: vicious bloody dismemberment

Chris Nash's indie darling slasher movie is both terribly generic and gorgeous to watch.

Taking the locket awakens Johnny, an unstoppable undead monster whose backstory we get in a campfire scare story. He then proceeds to go on a murdering spree. This is very very by the numbers slasher movie fare that I couldn't give a shit about. Especially when there's a couple of gratuitous kills of lone women one of which made me think FFS c'mon. I'm really not a fan of generic slasher movies and by almost every measure this is one.

Where it stands out is how it's presented. No soundtrack but nature. Long or static shots with the action happening in some off centre bit of the frame. Lots of "third person" following shots as Johnny plods through the forest silently. An interesting ending obviously ripe for a sequel but also ambiguous and masterfully showcasing the trauma of the oh so stereotypical final girl.

A dull movie directed in a very interesting manner but sadly this is not enough to get it above 6/10.
