When large armoured bugs suddenly emerge from beneath the surface of the Earth they kill almost 95% of our population largely by surprise but also by virtue of being spectacularly hard to kill. Society mostly collapses but it's soon worked out they don't go higher than 8000ft above sea level. Mountain top communities form but things are precarious: little could be saved in the chaos.

Now three years later the medical supplies that keep his son alive are exhausted so Will (Anthony Mackie) decides he has to go down into the nearest city to search for more. He is accompanied by hunter Katie (Maddie Hasson) and antisocial scientist Nina (Morena Baccarin) who has been working on something that might kill the "Reapers". She just needs to get to her old lab...

No good will come of this.

The 80s called it wants its ridiculous monster movie plot back.

OK this isn't too far from various recent setups like "A Quiet Place" where there's a slightly flaky poorly justified reason for "suddenly monsters appear" that allow our protagonists to explore a rewilded rural/town setting with the ever present fear of sudden attack. Unfortunately this does so with a clunky exposition heavy script, generic on rails plotting and utterly unconvincing science woo that really is 80s creature feature level.

Which is a shame as otherwise it's been put together well. Anthony Mackie puts the work in and relative unknown Hasson is excellent. Baccarin phones it in a bit but at least she's in a role that isn't "hot love interest" There's even some decent action and the outdoor scenes are very pretty.

It's just so unambitious though, 5/10. Exactly what you'd expect for something shovelled unceremoniously onto streaming.
