Arcadian

Fifteen years after the collapse of society, Paul (Nic Cage) lives on a remote smallholding with his two sons Joseph (Jaeden Martell) and Thomas (Maxwell Jenkins). They're not the only people around, there are several farms within extend walking distance and Thomas spends a lot of time at the Rose farm because he has a crush on Charlotte (Sadie Soverall).

This all sounds slightly idyllic (per the title) and it would be but for the hideous monsters that come out at night forcing everybody to barricade themselves indoors at dusk. One night Thomas is late coming back from the Rose farm.

No good will come of this.

CW: icky in places, shakycam which I thought had died a death

This is not a Nic Cage movie, it's just a movie that happens to have Nic Cage in, if you see what I mean.

It's also unashamedly simple. There are monsters that come out at night and this is a run down resource scarce world. People farm, burn candles and oil lamps and have maybe a couple of shotguns. That's it, there's no "humans are the real monsters" apart from some rough justice for theft from seemingly normal but hard hearted people.

We never get any exposition apart from the teens making up stories it's just a fight for survival one fateful night. Worth a look but not going to surprise you with anything but its very direct and to the point style 7/10. Oh and the monsters are WEIRD and a bit icky.
