Rosemary's baby

Rosemary (Mia Farrow) and Guy (John Cassavetes) are a young couple in 60s New York and move into an old grand apartment block.

Guy is an actor hoping for a break but has things begin to fall through while Rosemary wants a baby and finds him increasingly neglectful.

The couple are befriended by an old couple who they initially find tedious but Guy swiftly warms to them, much to Rosemary's distaste.

No good will come of this.

CW: rape, gaslighting, coercive control

A classic early horror I've not seen until now, it still works. Obviously everything is much toned down compared to how you'd do it now so it's a slow subtle slide into horror after an initial "newleyweds drama" tone that fades.

There are little tells about the coven they're being groomed by all around, some subtle ("year 1"), some less some less so ("tanis root"), some ridiculous ("did you see, he has pierced ears").

I've always disliked Woody Allen with whom she was heavily associated so not really encountered Mia Farrow but in this she is excellent. Ruth Gordon and Sidney Blackmer perfectly embody the flamboyant but ultimately sinister neighbours.

It's a bit camp and stagey in places but this was the 60s. Lots of interesting 60s period detail that would have been just normal or even cutting edge at the time. When Rosemary gets a Vidal Sassoon haircut it's a real standout moment.

Recommended 8/10 if you can hold your nose from the reek of 70s paedophiles.
