After gaining her trust they hear the tale of Camp Nightwing and the night one of the councillors went on a rampage with an axe.
This to was caused by the witch's curse and we learn more about the grim history of Shadyside.
Again I was unconvinced by this but not quite so riled up as I knew what to expect.
It's got all the same elements as the first part and the same problems.
Having seen it described as "Goosebumps for young adults" I now know why it irritated me. It's an 18 certificate. They've just taken a children's story and added 18 certificate material, cutting and pasting it in over the top of what would have been there were it a 12 without making any other changes.
This means the swearing is incongruous. The violence is incongruous. The nudity is incongruous. The sex is incongruous. The weird way characters make a big show of smoking marijuana and popping pills like sweets is incongruous.
It's like when movies are toned down to avoid an 18 and you can just see where they wanted a "motherfucker" or two but substituted something else. Only the other way around.
Had it been a 12 without the 18 cert stuff it would have been awesome. The cast are great, it's made with great craft all round and the three part story unravelling the mystery is well put together. It's just the contrast between the bulk of the movie and the odd "oh look, people fucking" or "oh look, axe to the face" is just so jarring and for me kills it.
Will I watch part three? Maybe not 5/10.
If this odd tonal mix works for you then I expect you'll enjoy it greatly because it's very polished but I just can't get past it.
