Beyond the Black Rainbow

At the Arboria Institute, heavily sedated young woman Elena undergoes somewhat one-sided regular therapy sessions with Doctor Nyle.

As things progress it becomes clear that the relationship is more prisoner and captor but that neither Doctor nor patient is conventionally human.

CW: lots of flashing/flickering images, not for anybody who is very photosensitive. I had to shade my eyes a bit.

This crimson tinged homage to 70s weird shit from the director of Mandy makes that look like Disney.

Kubrick meets Cronenberg with a side order of Carpenter on keyboards it's visually and audibly stunning but also basically WTF?

If you avidly watched weird 70s sci-fi that was on late night on BBC2 or in heavy rotation at The Scala this is probably for you. Wikipedia tells me Cosmatos spent his inheritance making this, it's the sort of thing that only gets made nowadays through patronage or largesse.

I'm not exaggerating how amazing this looks and sounds given the tiny budget, it's a lesson in imaginative filmmaking that makes typical mainstream fare look tiny.

I'm also not exaggerating how WTF it is.

Recommended 7/10 but it might make you want to spoon your own eyes out.
