The Midnight Sky

A lone scientist (George Clooney) stays behind at an Arctic scientific base when it is evacuated in the wake of a global catastrophe. Meanwhile a returning space exploration mission from Jupiter is puzzled by the loss of contact with Ground Control and the comms specialist (Felicity Jones) continues to try and make contact. The two end up communicating intermittently and he warns them to attempt no landing.

Somebody somewhere thought it was a good idea to do a mashup of "The Martian" and "On the beach" and ended up with something too long, too filled with unbelievably serendipitous plot convenient peril and just too clichéd for the money and talent visible onscreen.

It tries to maintain mystery by not telling you anything and it's obvious that's the only way they could think to try and hide the far too obvious twist from the audience. I hope the book was better.

I'd really looked forward to this from the trailer but no, it's utter yawnsome predictable painted by numbers mediocrity with a hard sci-fi gloss that's nano-thin and wears off when they start talking about anything beyond trivialities.

3/10 avoid.
