Their friendship group has been invited by a Swedish friend Pelle to attend midsummer festival at his ancestral commune in rural Sweden.
Christian was going to dump Dani and head off to the festival without her, but after an argument instead he invites her along.
No good will come of this.
I really enjoyed this.
The plot is "Folk horror:101" and a jaded take would be you've seen it ALL before.
However, the execution is great. It's chock full of unsettling imagery and soundscapes that serve as the backdrop for a languorous study of grief and a failing relationship.
Did we need more "crass Americans abroad" or "facial deformity = monster" in a film. Not really but it came with a fantastic performance from Florence Pugh that wasn't "hot girl runs from killer" so I'd say on the whole it's at the 'good' rather than 'trashy' end of the horror spectrum, 8/10.
