The eyes of Tammy Faye

This biopic of televangelist Tammy Faye Baker (Jessica Chastain) covers her life from childhood induction into evangelical church despite disapproval from her stern faced mother through courtship with her eventually infamous husband Jim (Andrew Garfield) and the pair's fall from grace.

Not my usual fare this paints Tammy Faye as a somewhat naive but unwavering partner to the grift of Jim Bakker, seduced by the lifestyle this allowed but also trying to be true to her own vision of her faith.

The bubblegum performance from Chastain is fantastic: there are people in the world like this and she totally convinces where it could have been a slice of camp parody.

I'm not sure the thing as a whole really has anything to say. Is it a true picture of the person? It veers towards hagiography but it's worth it to see Chastain cover the whole gamut of her life, from giggling newlywed to the down at heel curiosity local slacker teens laugh at, 7/10.
