Don't Breathe

Rocky (Jane Levy), Alex (Dylan Minette) and Money (Daniel Zovatto) are young people with low prospects living in poor neighbourhood in modern Detroit. To make some money they've taken to burglarising the homes of clients of the monitored alarm company Alex's father works for using stolen keys/codes.

Knowing this can't continue as the link will be made they plan a "big score" against a blind Army Veteran (Stephen Lang) who Money has been told has a lot of cash hidden at home.

No good will come of this...

CW: sexual assault/rape and implied very nasty stuff but almost nothing is actually seen onscreen

Another "little shocker that could" this is excellent. The would-be burglars have the tables turned and find themselves trapped with their "victim". It's tense as fuck with lots of creeping around in the dark or mere feet from each other in ordinary looking but cluttered rooms.

Very sparse on dialogue they thankfully don't resort to blind=superpowers. The unnamed "blind man" is just a tough old bastard who knows his house well, has bars on the windows and multiple locks on every door and is highly motivated that the protagonists don't get away.

There is of course an improbably large creepy basement and air vents and crawlspaces like never seen in a real house but these are concessions you have to allow for it not to be over in thirty minutes. They even manage to queue up a sequel in a way that makes me want to see it. They probably made this for tuppence but they squeezed every ounce out of the budget and the only time it looks cheap is a guard dog that occasionally looks happy to be on scene more than about to attack.

9/10 Highly recommended if you like nasty movies. It's not very graphic most of the nastiness is implied and closest in form to a slasher movie but also kind of isn't one.
