Morvern Callar

Morvern Callar (Samantha Morton) finds her boyfriend dead following a messy suicide, leaving her some Christmas presents, a mix tape, some money "for the funeral" and the draft of a novel "for you" with instructions to send it to a publisher.

Stumbling around in a state of denial she parties with her best friend Lanna (Kathleen McDermott) while leaving his body sprawled in the flat they shared.

Eventually she has to face what to do with both the body and the book.

In another timeline this pitch could be a perky but edgey rom-com that also involves dismemberment, but this is Lynne Ramsay so it's not.

Morvern is lost in a dead end life of crapness and the small sum of money she suddenly has to hand allows her to explore new options even if all she can think of right now is a trip to Ibiza.

As the film progresses it's clear she knows what she doesn't want any more (if not 100% what she wants instead) and tries to hit eject but can't persuade Lanna to come with her. When the chance to reinvent herself comes she grasps it but it proves slippery.

Don't expect any answers or resolution but it's quite compelling. Perhaps more so if your life once involved Ecstasy and clubbing, but that was never my life so I found these scenes a bit meaningless.

Recommended, 8/10 because I think it will touch everybody a bit differently and frankly we need more films like this despite their lack of clear purpose.
